“He couldn’t even say a full sentence without stuttering, and now he recites rhymes to us at home,” said Kahil’s* mother, her voice trembling. Three-year-old Kahil lives with his parents and two sisters in a small, kaccha house (made of tin sheets) in one of Mumbai’s slum communities. The family uses a public toilet and struggles through every monsoon as dirty water floods their home. His father works as a tailor and his mother works as a househelp.
Kahil stayed home, quiet and withdrawn. His mother was deeply worried, unsure of how to help him. When a Vision Rescue Champion visited their community, she approached the Champion and shared her situation. That conversation led to Kahil’s enrollment at the Beacon Learning Centre (BLC). At first, Kahil cried often in class, struggled to speak, and found it hard to sit still. But the teachers at BLC were patient. They listened to him, taught him gently, and gave him the space to grow. Slowly, he started paying attention and slowly began to understand what was being taught.
Today, Kahil speaks fluently and proudly says, “I want to be a soldier to protect everyone.” Thank you, dear donors, for helping children like Kahil in impoverished communities.
