You can smell it even before you see the house, a nala (gutter) runs right alongside it, filled with garbage and waste. The stench clings to the air. During the rains, the dirty water from the nala floods the house, leaving everything inside soaked and unusable.
This is where six-year-old Kiran* lives in a small tin-sheet home in one of the slum communities in Mumbai. There’s barely space for her family of four. No toilet. No privacy. Her father, a daily wage labourer, often struggles to find consistent work. With no money or support, school seemed out of reach until a community champion told her mother about our Beacon Learning Centre (BLC).
Kiran joined Nursery in 2022. Today, after completing Senior KG, she has moved on to formal school. Her teacher says, “Kiran learns everything so quickly. She loves poems and stories. Her writing is neat and reads Hindi fluently.” Kiran’s face lights up when you ask about her dream. She says, “Main badi hoke teacher banungi. Meri teacher jaise” (When I grow up, I wanna be a teacher, just like my teacher). Thank you, Vision Rescue donors, this change is because of you.
