In the lively streets of Mumbai, there is a 7-year-old girl named Sarika* who was born into a family of seven. Sarika’s family migrated from Bihar to Mumbai to live a better life. During their initial days in Mumbai, Sarika’s family found temporary shelter at her aunt’s place as they were still adjusting to the new city. Her aunt’s family of five also lived under the same roof.

Living in such close quarters wasn’t easy. With so many people under one roof, tensions sometimes ran high. Arguments would break out over trivial matters, and tempers flared in the crowded space. Access to basic amenities is a daily struggle, as they lack proper toilet facilities, clean water, and a secure shelter. The absence of adequate healthcare services further adds to their worries.

Sarika’s father, a daily wage labourer, often found solace in alcohol after long days on the road. His addiction made him unreliable, sometimes neglecting his work and leaving the family’s finances in disarray. The burden fell heavily on Sarika’s mother, who had to step in to provide for the family’s needs. Despite already having the tailoring skill, circumstances had previously prevented her from fully utilizing it to support her family. However, last year, with the help of Vision Rescue’s Community Case Counsellor (CCC), she found opportunities to work and contribute to the household income.

In June 2023, Sarika and her younger sister were enrolled in the Beacon Learning Center (BLC). Thank you, dear donors; because of your generous donations, Sarika and her sister received essential educational materials, including a lunchbox, school bag, sandals, uniform, and raincoat. These provisions excited her about attending school regularly, and she showed a keen interest in her studies.

Vision Rescue not only offered Sarika free and quality education but also extended its support to the family. Nutritious meals were provided at BLC, addressing the nutritional gaps that plagued the family. The family’s hygiene practices, once neglected to the point of emitting a stifling stench, underwent a remarkable change. Showers became a regular part of their routine, and the pungent odour gave way to newfound cleanliness.

Sarika is presently in first grade and aspires to become a police officer. We are grateful to you, dear donors, for your contributions, which have significantly impacted their lives, and we are truly grateful for your kindness. We invite you to continue to be a part of our mission and make a difference.
