8-YEAR-OLD SURAJ HAD NEVER BEEN IN A CLASSROOM UNTIL YOUR DONATIONS GIFTED HIM EDUCATION.

Suraj lives in a small hutment made of tin sheets near Mumbai’s largest garbage dump.

His father earns ₹6000/- per month as a daily-wage laborer, of which a hefty amount goes toward their electricity bill and water charges. Like most others here, they too frequent the community sanitation facilities as there are none at home.

Because their slum is an unauthorized settlement, they are at the mercy of private vendors who charge exorbitant sums for basic necessities such as water, electricity, and gas.

Suraj and his family struggle to sleep in peace. Suraj himself was 8 years old, but he had never had the chance to go to school.

Your gifts brought Suraj into our Beacon Learning Centre. You also provided him with nutritious meals, stationary, monsoon accessories, health assessments, and dental checkups.

Suraj enjoyed learning for the first time in his life at our Open Basic Education Course. He has learnt to name all the birds and animals in English! Our dream is for him to be literate enough to join his peers at a formal school next year. He’s working hard at catching up on the years lost.

Suraj’s mother has grown with him, she participates in all our focus group meetings for parents.

When the first lockdown hit Indian in 2020, Suraj’s father was in a dilemma. He had lost his job and found it difficult to put food on their table. He couldn’t pay his house rent for months. They were slipping into an even worse state of poverty than ever before.

When his whole world was shattered you stepped up and supported his family.

Your generosity reached out to Suraj and his family with groceries every month and nutritious snacks for the children. Your kindness has enabled Suraj to continue his studies online. He dreams of becoming a police officer when he grows up.

Thank you for Reaching out with Love to Suraj and his family!
