CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN!

9 out of 10 parents in metro cities of India find it difficult to meet their child’s school expenses, and Nazmin’s* mother is one such parent.

Every morning Nazmin’s mother would see children going to schools close to her neighbourhood, but the sky-rocketing fees and other expenses of these private schools were beyond her capacity at the time. At the same time, Nazmin’s mother saw little ones in yellow uniforms attending Vision Rescue’s Beacon Learning Centre right in her slum community. She was amazed to see these children improving in studies and their lifestyle changing for the better. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she spoke to parents in her community to find out more about Vision Rescue.

She heard about the focus group meetings for women in her slum community, meetings for Vision Rescue Community Champions and even free medical camps. She enquired further about Vision Rescue and decided to enroll her daughter Nazmin in our Beacon Learning Centre. Because of your donations, little Nazmin was able to access free, quality education right from within her community!

Little Nazmin walked into our classroom in 2018, and has been with us since. Her mother says, “ I’m seeing so many positive changes in my daughter. She does her homework regularly and is also improving in her studies.” Along with quality education your gifts reached Nazmin with hearty nutritious meals every weekday, health assessments and dental checkups, stationery and also the yellow uniform she’d looked forward to wearing like her neighborhood kids.

Nazmin’s family of six members lives in the North of Mumbai, in an unauthorised slum community. Every night her father travels approx. 35 kilometres to work as a helper in one of the largest fish markets in Mumbai and at dawn he waits at the market to be hired for work on daily wages. Nazmin’s father strives hard to provide basic necessities for his family. Nazmin’s mother too makes every effort possible to support her family however she can and she works three jobs to supplement her husband’s income. Despite both parents working, it was still hard for the family to make ends meet. Nazmin’s elder sister became one among 40% of teenage girls in India who dropout of schools, to help out at home.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country, like many others, Nazmin’s parents too faced the rising wave of unemployment. As all educational institutes had to shut down, children from our Beacon Learning Centres too missed their nutritious midday meals. There were risks of our children falling into malnourishment once again but with your support, many families of our children like Nazmin’s received groceries each month of the pandemic along with hearty, nutritious snacks for the children.

The pandemic forced us to pivot from physical to online classes and Nazmin was left behind by the digital divide. Nazmin didn’t have a working digital device at home on which to attend our online classes.

Vision Rescue aims not only to engage children in education but also to sustain them in the same. Kind supporters like you stepped in to support us and Nazmin was the one among 800 children in our slum communities who received a tab so that they could continue their studies online, even during the pandemic.

All these services helped little Nazmin sustain in education.

“If Vision Rescue wouldn’t have supported my child’s education, she probably would never have been educated,” says Nazmin’s mother.

Thank you for stepping in to support Nazmin and her family in their most difficult times. It is because of your support that Nazmin gets quality education at no cost to her parents and her mother doesn’t have to worry about her education anymore.
