MD Nasim is just in his teens, but life has dealt him some difficult cards. Around the time of his birth his parents and two older brothers left their hometown in Uttar Pradesh and moved to Mumbai to find work. They settled into a tin-sheet house in a slum community, and his parents and two older brothers took up what odd jobs they could find to feed themselves. Four years later, Nasim’s father was returning from a trip to his hometown when he went missing at the railway station, never to be found again. Last year Nasim’s older brother died of an electric shock at work.

Just a few months before, Nasim’s Class 7 teacher at a local government school had told him he was no good at studies, and he had dropped out of school for good.

Nasim’s oldest brother took up daily-wage labour to keep his family afloat and his mother Kamrunissa went into animal husbandry. Eight goats, two ducks and two hens moved into Kamrunissa and Nasim’s tiny hutment. The ducks and hens provided eggs for both food and sale, and the goats were being reared for festival slaughter when they would fetch the highest price.
Their house was often unhygienic and hence illnesses were frequent. Returning to education was not on the horizon for Nasim. He was hoping to find a job and supplement his mother’s meagre income.
That’s when your support reached out to Nasim, with hope and a promising future.

In August this year, Nasim joined our Open Basic Education classes that enable drop-outs to study again. His teacher encouraged him continually and Nasim slowly overcame his under confidence.

In October you gifted him dental screening and medical assessment, and this month he participated in our annual Sports Day. He turned up extra early to help clear the grounds for games and you should have seen the joy on this face throughout the day!

One day, Nasim hopes to become a teacher just like the Vision Rescue teachers who are building him up. Surely it’s your invaluable involvement in his life that has inspired this dream. Thank You for caring so deeply for Nasim.
