Five-year-old Basil* began his journey at BLC in 2023 with a twinkle in his eye and great curiosity. His older brother, who joined BLC in 2022, paved the way for his younger siblings.
Living near Mumbai’s Deonar dumping ground is tough. The 4,500 tonnes of waste collected daily cause frequent epidemics due to lack of safe water, sanitation, and healthcare. Poor hygiene and open defecation worsen conditions for struggling families. Despite these challenges, Basil and his siblings play cricket in the narrow lanes, their laughter filling the small space with joy.
Their mother, a dedicated community champion, has motivated parents in her community to enroll their children into the BLC program. Her husband, a daily wage laborer, supports his wife’s hard work. As she reflects on her journey, tears of joy glisten in her eyes. Her heart swells with pride as she sees Basil and his brothers grow, knowing that every struggle, every sacrifice, has been worth it for the promise of a better tomorrow.
