Jahid is the third among five children, but the first to be literate in his family. Six years ago, the family moved to Mumbai to find employment for Jahid’s father Mustafa, a construction labourer. Life was difficult in the slum community they had settled into, and Mustafa never had the resources to educate his children in Mumbai.
While it was too late for the older children, Jahid joined our Open Basic Education course that’s helping him read and write for the first time in his life. His dream is to finish the course, get admitted into a formal school, then medical college and graduate as a doctor.
Jahid’s parents are amazed at how much his education has changed him. They say he no longer uses foul language at home and is so motivated to study that he gets ready for school every morning all by himself.
They’re so inspired that they’ve now sent Jahid’s two younger siblings to school! It’s amazing just how transformative your gift of education has been to this family.
