“Are you sick? Do you have fever? I can give you medicine!” says 5-year-old Firdous, whose dream is to become a doctor when she grows up. Right now she’s just in our senior kindergarten class, but she’s already roleplaying her dream!
Vision Rescue first met Firdous in 2017. She was a tiny tot born into a slum community near Mumbai’s largest garbage dump, where nearly 50 per cent of the children are malnourished and 30 per cent are out of school.
Every morning Firdous’ parents would head to work to somehow keep their family of four afloat, leaving Firdous alone with her older sister Sayma. The two girls would spend all day at home or playing on the streets of their slum community that’s notorious for its violence against women.
A survey conducted in 2017 with over 6000 families in this slum revealed that 28 percent of the population knew of child sexual abuse incidents in just the past one year.
How relieved Firdous’ mother was to hear about our Beacon Learning Centre inside her slum community that would freely educate Firdous and relieve her sister Sayma to focus on her studies too.
Little Firdous joined us in nursery, went on to complete junior kindergarten with us and is now in our senior kindergarten. Your gifts have provided all her education materials, a nutritious meal every school day of the past three years, school bags, uniforms, raincoats and so much more.
Most importantly, you’ve rescued Firdous from the dangers of the street and brought her into a classroom where her gifts are nurtured, and she is loved, praised and protected. Firdous can’t wait to grow up and make her dreams of becoming a doctor come true!
Only time will tell the life-changing value of your investment into Firdous’ life. Thank you for believing in her worth, lifting her out of a mind-set of poverty and setting her on the path to empowerment!
