While India observed National Science Day on the 28th of February, our little ones in the four slum communities that Vision Rescue works in had a gala time conducting experiments, exploring their curiosity and teaching their parents too! “Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated,” said Rosalind. Franklin, and we at Vision Rescue put that thought into action at the Science Day Programmes we held across our target slum communities in Mumbai.

Vision Rescue’s Beacon Learning Centres (BLC) in the Mandala, Shivaji Nagar, Maharashtra Nagar and Kalwa slum communities were beaming with eyes lit up as parents watched their little ones not only conduct experiments but also explain the science behind them proficiently. It was heartwarming as we saw mothers and some fathers, especially those who are daily wage workers, take the day off to come and learn with their children.

Children experimented with colour, water, chemicals, magnets and other everyday objects. Experiments on how chemical reactions take place enthused parents and kept them glued-in as they even saw how a volcanic effect took place.“Can I try this out too?” exclaimed one of the mothers in excitement, expressing that she never got an opportunity like this in her own childhood.

Across four centres, over 1400 children & parents participated in the World Science Day events at our BLCs while  640 children actively took  on the role of teachers to demonstrate and explain day-to-day scientific concepts to their parents. A creative step as we move forward in our mission to engage & sustain children in education, isn’t it?

Students of each grade demonstrated a different age-appropriate scientific concept.

Junior KG – Demonstrated and explained how some objects sink and some float in water.

Senior KG – Differentiated between soluble and insoluble objects, showing how some dissolve in water and some don’t.

Grade 1 – Explained gravity and static electricity and demonstrated how magnets work.

Grade 2 – Showed how different substances react differently to hard water (salt added to it) and soft water (regular water).

Grade 3 – Demonstrated how chemical reactions take place by showing the volcanic effect.

This was done under the diligent training and guidance of our very own BLC teachers. The children and parents involved in this World Science Day event are those that are living in extreme poverty and have probably never had this experience in their own childhood. Most parents of our BLC children are school-dropouts or have never had the opportunity to go to school themselves and this is why dear donors we appreciate your commitment toward our cause of education even more.

Your donations enable us to organise such events. You help us creatively educate our children, their families and break them free from limiting mindsets. We get to witness the magic of intergenerational transformation every day, thanks to you, and we couldn’t be more grateful! Thank YOU for always Reaching out with Love!
