In the slum community that Aayush lives in, there are over 5000 families, with at least 2-3 children per home. However, children below the age of six in this slum struggle to access quality pre-primary education. Because they live in an unauthorized settlement, municipal education services are minimal, and most parents can’t afford private schooling. As a result, hundreds of children here miss out on the crucial years of early childhood education. Aayush was one of those children. His father could afford to pay for education for his elder son, but not for Ayush. So little Ayush spent most of his days playing on the streets of his slum community, losing out on his foundational years of education.
Aayush’s father Shailendra had moved to Mumbai from a small village in Maharashtra several years ago. Shailendra had completed his education only till high school and finding a steady job in the financial capital of India seemed impossible to him. He settled in one of the poorest slums in the North of Mumbai, living in abject poverty, deprived of basic facilities such as water, electricity and sanitation. Shailendra found a job as a daily-wage helper and with the little that he earned, he provided the necessities for his family.

One afternoon, our community workers were looking for children who were out of school and met little Aayush playing on the streets of his slum community. He was physically quite weak. We met his parents and told them about free education available to Ayush at our Beacon Learning Centre. They gladly enrolled him into our classes.

Aayush was also examined by our healthcare team and given nutritional supplements for his undernourishment. Even with this support, attending classes every day became a task for him. Over weeks of counseling and follow-up, Aayush grew stronger and began to come regularly to class. Aayush’s teacher was so thrilled to see Aayush improving in his studies!

Aayush was progressing well in education and health, when the pandemic hit India in March 2020. His father lost his daily-wage job. With no source of income, he struggled hard to keep a roof over his family.

Little Aayush couldn’t come to our classes anymore, as all educational centers, including ours, were closed for the pandemic.

In their most trying times, kind supporters like you from the Vision Rescue community stepped in to help Aayush and his family with groceries every month and hearty nutritious snacks for the children. It was through your generosity that Aayush was able to continue his studies online right from his home! Your gifts have sustained Aayush in education throughout the pandemic. Aayush’s father is grateful that his son gets to stick with his studies even while thousands of vulnerable children in poor slum communities like theirs have been left behind by the digital divide. Even in the extreme poverty of their surroundings, Aayush and his family have stood strong through this pandemic because of your helping hand.
Thank you for Reaching out with Love to Aayush!
