Every afternoon when Amir comes home, he holds close a yellow box packed to the lid with nutritious food. It’s the meal you gift you him every single school day, and it’s meant just for him. But Amir waits until he gets home to open it up, because when he does, he knows that his meal-for-one will become a family lunch – his younger brother Aman will join in, and sometimes his older brother Amjad too.
Amir lives in a slum community that borders Mumbai’s largest garbage dump. Just before the monsoon of 2017, his parents enrolled him into our junior kindergarten class inside his slum community. When the monsoon hit though, it ravaged the slum community, destroying tin-sheet homes and razing makeshift hutments to the ground. Amir’s home was ruined too.
It was your immediate giving that rescued Amir’s family – besides utensils and grains, you gifted his family a tarpaulin roof cover that kept their home dry even during the next year’s rains!
Amir’s mother Akirunissa can’t express her gratitude enough for what you’ve done. Her way of saying thank you is to volunteer as our ‘community champion’. At every medical, dental or awareness camp we conduct in their slum community, Akirunissa rallies together her friends, family and neighbours to participate. She also recently enrolled in our paper-bag making course.
As for Amir, he’s completing senior KG now, and he enjoys reading and writing the alphabet. He’s all set to join formal school in new academic year! Meanwhile, his brother Aman has just registered to join our nursery in June this year!
Thank you for reaching out to the family in countless ways in the last few years. Your financial support has rescued them in desperate times in the past, and today, it’s helping them prepare for a promising future!
