Three years ago Raju’s house in south Mumbai was razed to the ground because his community had illegally squatted on municipal land. Evicted, the family moved nearly 45 km north into one of Mumbai’s biggest slum communities.
Raju and his sister Nisha dropped out of school.Their older brother Papu continued to sell toy binoculars with their father every day at the Gateway of India. It took both their father and brother’s daily wage income to keep the family afloat in the new slum community.
It’s your donations that restored education to Raju and Nisha after months away from school. On door-to-door house visits, our community workers met with the children and their mother Meena to talk about our Open Basic Education course that helps children who have dropped out of school catch up on the years lost and re-enter schooling.

Meena was apprehensive at first because she somehow wanted to return to the locality of their demolished home. She felt that admitting the children in school at the new slum community would shut that window for good.

But months passed and the children were still playing on the streets all day. After much counselling, Meena gave in, and Raju and Nisha joined our OBE class.
However, time away from school had taken its toll – the kids disliked learning, and wanted to go back on the streets and play with their friends. Raju bunked class often and if Nisha was unwell, Raju refused to come as well. It became routine for one of our staff to fetch the children from home and escort them to class almost daily.

A year into classes, today, the children and their mother are convinced about the power of education. Raju and Nisha have both passed their OBE exams with flying colours! In fact, Nisha topped her batch and is now determined to become a teacher and empower other children like her. Raju wants to work in a corporate office, and support his family one day.

As for Meena, she’s now our ‘Community Champion’, encouraging other mothers in her neighbourhood to educate their children! Even though she struggles with a hearing and speech impairment, she’s been most enthusiastic about every parent-teacher meeting, awareness program and medical camp.

Thank you for giving your precious support to empower this family. You are the reason these children could pick their lives up despite losing their home. Thank You for believing in them!
