Little Ankita barely knows her father. From birth, she’s mostly heard of him as an unemployed alcoholic who abused and neglected her mother and older sisters, driving them out of his home and onto the streets. They finally found refuge at Ankita’s grandmother’s hutment in one of our slum communities.
For Ankita – this one-room house is everything – it’s home to her, her mother Kanchan, her sisters Pooja and Gauri and her grandmother Sarita. All five of them live on the sole income of Ankita’s mother Kanchan who is a housemaid.
Poverty has stolen so much from Ankita – it first took away her right to a healthy body, and next it took away her right to education. Her mother’s income could only support her two older sister’s education at the free municipal school nearby; even though their education is free, her mother must still cover the costs of their daily commute. There was no way she could afford that for Ankita too.
So little Ankita remained at home until your support reached out with love to her through Vision Rescue. Ankita was welcomed into our Beacon Learning Centre inside her slum community and she was immediately diagnosed as malnourished. Our medical team has worked with her and the family for two years now, and today Ankita is no longer undernourished.

Ankita loves being at our Beacon Learning Centre. Her favourite activities involve drawing and she likes it when she gets to recite poems with her whole class. In the new academic year, Ankita will join her sisters in formal school.

Ankita’s mother and grandmother are so grateful to you for your support because of which they can dream of a beautiful future for Ankita. Ankita’s aunt also recently finished a self-defence course with us and is now on our bracelet-making course.

Thank you for supporting this family of underprivileged women to reach beyond their circumstances, make the most of their resources and work towards a life filled with hope!
