Maya is 12 years old and has lived all her life in Ujoniya, a village in Uttar Pradesh. In early 2018 though, she was brought to Mumbai by her uncle and aunt. Her family back home was torn apart by domestic violence. Her mother had since left the home, and Maya had to come away to Mumbai with her relatives.

Once here, Maya never resumed her education. She spent her days looking after her relatives’ tin-sheet home and wandering the slum community they were a part of.

In mid 2018, your donations enabled us to visit home after home in Maya’s slum community, and find her, as well as numerous other children who weren’t engaged in education. Maya was enrolled into our Open Basic Education course that is helping her make up for the years she’s missed out on.

At school, Maya is known for taking initiative for every activity. During the annual Sports Day, she even volunteered to clean up the grounds before the races! She helps other students in class and she’s punctual every morning.

A few weeks into her new life at school, Maya fell seriously ill with a stomach infection. Your financial support enabled our medical team to attend to her immediately.

With treatment, she got well again, came back to school and resumed her studies. Later last year she was also a beneficiary of health assessments, oral screenings and the measles-rubella vaccine.

Thank YOU for rescuing Maya from a life of illiteracy and the dangers of being an unoccupied teenage girl in a slum community.

At our Vision Rescue school, she is safe, looked after and her dreams are nurtured. Maya wants to grow up and become a teacher so that she too can empower girls like herself.

Thank You for gifting Maya a new hope and destiny!
